What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life for patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illnesses.

Who Qualifies for Palliative Care?

Anyone with a serious, advanced or life-altering medical condition should have the benefits of palliative care. Your palliative care team can comfortably work alongside your curative care team ensuring you have the best possible quality of life throughout your illness journey.

Types of Palliative Care

Inpatient Care

A few palliative care centres in South Africa offer overnight stays for people who are unable to be cared for at home. This type of palliative care is for short-term respite stays to help control symptoms, or to provide loved ones with short breaks, or for end of life care.

Home Based Care

Home Based Care is when your palliative team comes to your home to provide you with support. This is often supplemented by some equipment that can make home more comfortable (like a hospital-style bed) and a nurse or carer who supports your loved ones to care for you. Most people prefer being cared for in the comfort of their home.

Family Friends Overnight Stays

Zazen provides overnight facilities for people with advanced illnesses such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiac disease. We work closely with your home based palliative care team to ensure there is seamless care between your home and Zazen. Only a medical team can refer you to Zazen, but we can conduct an assessment of your eligibility using our palliative team if you don’t have one.

At Zazen, you will be cared for by our palliatively trained multidisciplinary team of a nurse, doctor and social worker. We also welcome the presence of your chosen spiritual team while you’re staying with us.

Overnight stays at Zazen can be to support you with symptom management, to provide your loved ones with a short break, or Zazen can be used when you reach close to the end of life stage, for a dignified death outside of the home.

Our partnership with Sunninghill Guest Lodge means you will have the privacy of your own small cottage, with a private bathroom where your family and loved ones are welcome to come and visit as often as you’d like. The lodge also provides 24 hour carers, like you would have at home, to ensure you and your loved ones are comfortable and cared for at all times.
